Boys Varsity Baseball Splits a Doubleheader with Powers

Game Date
Apr 22, 2021

The Chargers split a doubleheader with Flint Powers Catholic Central Thursday evening.  In game one, the Dow jumped out to an early lead and continued to add to it as Trent Johnson pitched a complete game shutout to defeat Powers 9-0.  Johnson went 7 innings giving up 0 runs on 5 hits and striking out 9 batters.  The Chargers were led offensively by Cam Patty who collected 2 hits scored 2 runs and drove in 2 runs.  John Szajenko copied Patty with those numbers by delivering 2 hits, scoring 2 runs, and driving in a pair.  Jack Bakus blasted a 2 run home run to complete the scoring for Dow High.

Dow High continued to show improvement on the offensive side of things in game number two scoring runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings to get a 7-4 lead going into the final inning.  The Chargers were unable to hold that lead and entered the last half of the final inning down 9-7.  The offense made it interesting in the last inning with singles from Cam Patty and Jack Bakus to lead off.  Mix in a strike out and a walk to Logan McCoy and the Chargers had the bases loaded with 1 out, but were unable to push any runs across the plate.  Cam Haiser was the starting pitcher going 3 innings giving up 2 unearned runs.  Jack Bakus went 2 innings with 5 runs coming in.  Riley Nelson was unable to deliver any outs in the final inning giving up 2 runs and receiving the loss.  John Szajenko got Dow High out of trouble to close out the pitching for the Chargers.  Offensively, Dow was led by Cam Patty with 2 hits and driving in 2 runs.  Jack Bakus and Ryan Erdman each collected 3 hits.  John Szajenko delivered 2 hits  and Logan McCoy drove in 2 runs with a triple.

The Chargers will host the Annual Snowflake Tournament on Saturday April 24th at 12:00 noon at the Dow High Outdoor Athletic Complex.  Teams competing in this year's event include; Dow, Mount Pleasant, Alpena, and Hartland.
