Dow Splits Twinbill With Lapeer

The Dow High Varsity Baseball team fought back to make a game of the opener of a doubleheader vs. Lapeer, but fell short losing 7-6 in game one.  Down 6-2 in the 6th inning, the Chargers scored 4 runs to tie, but Lapeer came right back and put a run across in the bottom of the 6th and Dow could not get anything going in the 7th.  Caleb Brenske was the starting pitcher for Dow giving up 6 runs in his 4 innings of work.  Jay Worsley came in relief was quite impressive holding the Lightning down long enough for Dow to tie the game in the 6th.  Worsley would give up a walk and then a run scoring double to take the loss after the roaring comeback by the Chargers.  Dow was led offensively by Logan McCoy who collected 3 hits and driving in 3 runs in the top of the 6th with a base clearing double.  Jack Bakus went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and driving in a run.  Nolan Sanders also was 2 for 3 with a triple and driving in a run.

The Chargers did not wait long to get the bats out in game 2 taking the nightcap 7-2.  Dow would score 2 in the 1st and 3 in the second and then cap the scoring off with 2 in the 6th.  Riley Nelson, the leadoff hitter, set the tone for the Chargers by delivering 4 hits, scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 runs.  Logan McCoy would use great situational hitting to collect 3 sacrifice flies for 3 rbi's.  Jack Bakus would go 2 for 4 scoring a run and driving in a run.  John Szajenko added a pair of hits and a run scored.  Dow got a tremendous pitching performance from Nolan Sanders in game 2 as he would put in 6 innings of work and only give up 2 runs.  Sanders would scatter 5 walks and 4 hits by striking out 6 Lapeer hitters during the outing.  Logan McCoy came in and pitched a perfect 7th inning sriking out 2 batters.

"Our offense did a nice job of putting hits together and situational hitting to push runs across home plate today.  We work hard on our specialty defenses and the breakdown of those fundamentals cost us in game 1.  I am proud of the way the team fought back to tie game 1 while Jay Worsley performed very well on the mound for us to give us a shot at that game.  To play like we did in game 2 shows that we are close to putting it all together and with some solid fundamental work we could be dangerous by the end of May."  Coach Juday commented on his team's play for the day.  The Chargers, 12-10, will host the Annual Tom Roberts Invitational on Saturday May 15th.  Game 1 is scheduled for 12:00pm vs. St. Louis.  Bullock Creek will face Swan Valley in the other semi-final matchup.  The championship round is scheduled to start around 3:00pm.
