Game Date
May 17, 2021
Score
CHARGERS: 5
MIDLAND HIGH SCHOOL: 2

Dow Splits With Cross Town Rival Midland.

The Charger Baseball team put strong offense, good defense, and great pitching from Trent Johnson to take game #1 from Midland High 5-2 before dropping game 2 3-2 in a hard fought battle.  In Game 1 Trent Johnson threw a complete game scattering 9 hits and only allowing only 2 runs for the win.  Dow was led offensively by Billy VanSumeren who collected 3 hits and an rbi.  Caleb Brenske had a pair of hits and drove in a pair of runs.  Logan McCoy, Riley Nelson, and Johnson all added a pair of hits for the Chargers.

In Game 2, the Chargers took an early 2-1 lead and held that score until the 6th inning when Midland was able to plate a couple of runs across to take a 3-2 lead and hold on to the victory.  Caleb Brenske went 5 innings for Dow and had to be relieved in the 6th with 2 runners on base.  Brenske would take the loss as those runs would score later in the inning.  Brenske only allowed 2 hits in the outing and timely defense kept Midland at bay until a pair of walks to lead off the 6th gave Midland the opportunity to situational hit those runs home.  Jack Bakus would pitch out of the 6th and Logan McCoy pitched a scoreless 7th inning giving Dow a chance to either tie or win the game in the bottom of the 7th needing only 1 run to tie.  Dow was unable to get anything started in the 7th and leaving the tying run on second whent he 3rd out was made.  The Chargers were led offensively by Logan McCoy with a pair of hits and an rbi.  Bill Vansumeren and Trent Johnson each added 2 hits and Alex Liakos pushed the other run home on a bases loaded walk.

"Solid defense and good pitching was key for us today in our victory in game 1 and allowing us a chance in game 2.  We needed some timely hitting in game 2, but that just didn't happen and I give their pitcher credit at keeping us off balance.  We are so close to putting it all together, we just need to stay with the plan and good things will happen in the near future and get on a roll." Coach Juday commented.

The Chargers (15-11) will host Grand Blanc on Thursday May 20th at 4:00 at the Dow High Outdoor Athletic Complex with a doubleheader starting at 4:00.
