Game Date
May 22, 2021

The Dow High Varsity Baseball Team split a doubleheader at Forest Hills Northern Saturday.  The bats were ringing for the Chargers in game one as they would score seven runs after two outs in the first inning which led to a 14-3 win in 5 innings .  Jack Bakus got the ball rolling with a solo home run which then was followed by the next 7 batters reaching base.  Dan Kowalczyk, Billy VanSumeren, Cam Haiser, Tom Biacagalupo, and Riley Nelson would all drive in runs after Bakus's home run.  The Chargers would add 4 more runs in the second inning and 3 in the 4th.  Trent Johnson pitched 4 2/3 innings.  Giving up 3 runs by scattering 5 hits.  Johnson would strike out 4 on his way to earning the win.  Logan McCoy would come in to get the final out of the game.  The Chargers were led offensively by Billy VanSumeren who would go 2 for 4 with a two run home run and a two run scoring double.  Logan McCoy was 2 for 3 with a two run home run as well.  Cam Haiser, Dan Kowalczyk, and Tom Biacagalupo each added a pair of hits for Dow.

Game 2 was a hard fought battle and Dow came out fast, but would drop the game 7-4.  Dow coming off a big offensive game in the opener scored 2 runs in the first inning with a run scoring single by McCoy as Alex Liakos would come home.  Trent Johnson then drove McCoy home with a single giving Dow a 2-0 lead early.  Forest Hills came right back and scored two in the bottom of the first off starting pitcher Logan McCoy.  Dow would score a run in the second and another in the third to take a 4-2 lead and McCoy kept FHN at bay during the remainder of his time on the mound.  Jack Bakus came in middle relief for McCoy and the Huskies did not greet him well plating 3 runs off Bakus before Brenske would finish and give up the final 2 runs for FHN.  FHN pitching kept Dow scoreless for the final 4 innings to take the win.  The Chargers were led at the plate by Logan McCoy who was 3 for 4 with an rbi.  Riley Nelson would go 2 for 4 with an rbi.  Johnson and Bill VanSumeren would also drive in runs for Dow.

" Winning two games on the same day has been very difficult for us this season.  I was very happy to see our bats come to life in game one after being shut out on Thursday.  I felt we played a good game in the nightcap and once again, I have to tip my cap to the FHN pitchers as the bullpen shut us down late in the game 2.  We are playing good teams and playing good baseball against these teams.  This benefits us in the long run and I am proud of the way we are playing right now.  We have a busy week coming up and we will all have to be ready"  Coach Juday commented.

Dow (16-14) will play Bullock Creek at Dow Diamond on Tuesday May 25th at 4:00 before traveling to Petoskey on Wednesday May 24th and finishing out the week at Bay City Central on Friday May 28th.
