Snowflake Tournament

Game Date
Apr 24, 2021

The Charger Baseball Team played brilliantly Saturday afternoon and came up just short against the #9 team in Division I Hartland.  Dow beat Alpena in the semifinal of the tournament 16-4.  John Szajenko started on the mound for the Chargers going 2 innings and giving up 4 runs.  Caleb Brenske pitched the remaining 3 innings blanking Alpena the rest of the game and striking out 6 for the win.  Dow high was led on the offensive side by Logan McCoy who had 3 hits scoring 3 runs and knocking in 4.  Daniel Kowalczyk also had 3 hits scoring 2 runs and knocking in 4.  Jack Bakus had 2 hits and blasted a two run homer over the right field fence.  Cam Patty added a pair of hits.

In the championship game, the Chargers took a late lead into the 7th, but could not hold that lead and Hartland forced Dow to hit in the bottom of the 7th.  The Chargers got a two out single by Ryan Erdman who then stole second.  After a walk to Riley Nelson, Alex Liakos delivered a rocket single to center and Erdman was thrown out at the plate trying to score the winning run which forced extra innings.  Harland scored a run in the top of the 8th and Dow was unable to push a run home in the bottom of the inning giving Hartland the 2021 Snowflake Championship by the score of 7-6.  Nolan Sanders was the starting pitcher for Dow going 4 innings and giving up 4 runs.  Caleb Brenske, fresh off a nice pitching performance in the semi-final game, kept Hartland in check for the next 2 innings as Dow chipped their way back into the game and eventually taking the lead.  Brenske went 3 innings giving jump 2 runs on 2 hits and walking 4.  Brenske recorded 5 strike outs.  Logan McCoy finished for the Chargers and had to take the hard fought loss, but pitched a great 2 innings.  McCoy struck out 5 of the 6 outs that he recorded.

" I am very proud of the way we played this entire day.  We concentrated hard on situational hitting today and were very successful at that.  This is how you score runs in bunches and our team saw the results of their hard work.  We got a brilliant pitching performance from Caleb Brenske who showed a lot of moxie on the mound today.  I feel we took a big step foward in our approach to the game today and we can build on this."  Commented Coach Juday.

The Chargers travel to Carmen Ainsworth on Monday April 26th for a doubleheader.
