Dow Varsity Baseball Earns Split with Garber

The Dow High Varsity Baseball Team dropped a hard fought game in the first of a doubleheader losing 11-6 and then rebounded to win game 2 5-3.  In game one, Garber roared out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning off starting pitcher Caleb Brenske.  The Chargers would not back down and fought their way back to take a 6-5 lead in the bottom of 5th inning.  Caleb Brenske settled down and pitched the next four innings of shut out ball to give Dow the chance to come back.  The 6-5 lead was short held as Garber would score 2 in the 6th inning and then put up 4 more in the 7th off reliever Logan McCoy.  Brenske would go 6 innings giving up 7 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks.  Brenske would strike out 2 batters.  Tom Biacagalupo led the Chargers offense going 2 for 4 with 3 rbi.  Cam Haiser added 2 rbi to the offense.

The Chargers put up just enough offense to go with a great pitching performance by Trent Johnson and Jack Bakus to win game two 5-3.  Johnson , who was held to a 75 pitch count, went 5 2/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 11 hits and striking out 5.  Bakus came in relief to get out of the 6th inning and then holding off Garber in the 7th to pick up the save.  Bakus would give up 1 run on 2 hits.  Caleb Brenske had a great game at the plate going 2 for 3 with 3 rbi's and scoring a run.  Jack Bakus added 2 hits of his own driving in 1 run.

"We could have folded after game 2, but our team refused to lose that second game.  Trent did a wonderful job of pitching out of trouble and we had key hits in key spots to come out on top.  Caleb Brenske showed guts in his game one pitching.  Garber kind of beat him up in the first inning, but he settled down and gave us a chance to come back.  We are still searching for the mentality of putting teams away when we get a lead.  We will have to find that soon to get on a winning streak.  I am proud that we kept fighting all night long.  We are getting where we need to be, but it will be an ongoing process" says Coach Juday following the doubleheader.

The Chargers will host Heritage in a SVL doubleheader on Monday May 10th at the Dow HIgh Outdoor Athletic Complex.
