Boys Varsity Baseball vs. Petoskey HS School

Game Date
May 26, 2021
Score
CHARGERS: 8
PETOSKEY HIGH SCHOOL: 6

Dow put 2 hard fought games together to upset the highly ranked Petoskey Northmen with a doubleheader sweep.  It took the Chargers a few innings to heat up in game #1, but with 2 outs and nobody on in the 5th and only leading 3-2 Dow exploded with 5 runs on 5 hits to take an 8-2 lead into the final two innings.  Jay Worsley did a wonderful job of keeping Petoskey off balance, but ran into some trouble closing things out in the final inning.  Jack Bakus would come in relief in that final inning and put out the fire giving Dow an 8-6 victory.  Worsley would pick up the win and Bakus the save.  Worsley pitched 5 1/3 inning giving up 6 runs on 10 hits.  Bakus would record the final two outs for the save.  The Chargers were led offensively by Ryan Erdmann who was 3 for 4 with an rbi.  Tom Biacagalupo drove in 3 runs during the game with good situational hitting.  Riley Nelson drove in 2 runs and both Bill VanSumeren and Logan McCoy would add a pair of hits each.

Game 2 was a nail biter as Dow had to hold on to win 4-3 with the tying run and winning run on base.  Cam Haiser pitched into the final inning and got the lead off man to ground out to 3rd.  After walks to consecutive batters and an errant pick off throw, Petoskey put runners on 1st and 3rd.  Bill VanSumeren would take the mound in relief and get the much needed ground ball to shorstop for a game ending doubleplay and a sweep for Dow High.  Haiser went 5 1/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits and striking out 2 for the win.  VanSumeren would throw 2 pitches for 2 outs and get the save.  Dow got some clutch hitting to score their 4 runs and were led by; Bill VanSumeren who was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and an rbi.  Dan Kowalczyk, Caleb Brenske, and Tom Biacagalupo would add rbi's to the output.

"Wow, just what we needed.  It did not look good there for a couple of pitches, but we got that needed doubleplay and VanSumeren saved a great performance by Haiser.  I really like how we spread out our offense and everyone contributed just enough to get runs across home plate.  Petoskey is a really good team and I don't think people thought we could play with them, but we showed that we can play today.  We need to do some base running drills in the next few workouts as we are getting a little sloppy.  We have had multiple pick offs go against us in the last couple of games and we need to fix this as we move closer to the playoffs.  I am happy with these two wins and we are going to have some fun on this long bus ride home." Coach Juday's comments after the doubleheader.

The Chargers (20-14) will have to wait until Tuesday June 1st at Frankenmuth to get back to action as their Friday May 28th game vs. Bay City Central has been cancelled due to a change in schedule for Dow High graduation.
