Charger Varsity Baseball Sweeps Frankenmuth

The Dow High Charger Baseball Team swept a doubleheader from the host Frankenmuth Tuesday evening to carry their final regular season record for 2021 to 22-14 and end the regular season on a 6 game winning streak.  "This was two very well played games by us and just what we needed going into the District Tournament on Saturday.  We are playing good both defensively and having good at bats.  I wanted our team to be dangerous by the end of the season and that is exactly where we are right now".  Stated Coach Juday.

Game one was a pitcher's dual as Trent Johnson dealt 6 innings and only giving up 1 run, but the offense could only muster one run until the top of 7th when Logan McCoy delivered a lead off solo home run to break the 1-1 tie and give Dow and Johnson the win.  McCoy would be the closer in the bottom of the 7th and earn the save, but not without some drama.  A  lead off walk, a strike out, and another walk put Frankenmuth in business in the bottom of the 7th.  A liner to right field was gloved by Alex Liakos and he then fired a throw to 1st base to double off the runner for a game ending doubleplay.  The Chargers scored their other run in the top of the 5th inning with a lead off walk to Johnson.  After a strike out, Dan Kowalczyk hit a slow hopper to short to move Cam Patty(courtesy runner for Johnson) into scoring position at 2nd base.  Caleb Brenske would deliver a 2 out single that scored Patty and tied the game at 1-1.

In Game 2, The Chargers would score 1 run in the 1st, 2 runs in the 2nd, and 3 runs in the 3rd to take a 6-2 lead.  Frankenmuth would push 2 more across in the bottom of the 3rd to make it a 6-4 ball game, but Dow would come right back and put up 3 more runs in the 5th inning and hold on from there to win 9-4.  Nolan Sanders, just coming off an injury, started on the hill and went into the second inning before being lifted due to his pitch count restriction by Coach Juday.  Sanders would up 2 runs with only 1 of those being an earned run.  Jay Worsley would be the middle relief pitcher and earn the win for Dow going 4 innings and giving up the other 2 runs with only 1 of those being earned.  Caleb Brenske would enter with one out in the 7th and close things out for Dow.  "Good pitching and timely hitting were key in this game and we really put pressure on their defense with our baserunning in game 2.  We consistently had runners in scoring position and capatalized on bringing them home.  We talk about the advantage of being on 2nd base rather than 1st and the ability to score being so much greater at 2nd.  I think we had half a dozen steals of 2nd which gave us a great chance to score with each at bat." Juday referencing his thoughts on game 2.  The offense was led by Bill VanSumeren who was 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and blasted a solo home run.  Tom Biacagalupo added a pair of hits and 2rbi's.

The Chargers (22-14) will play in the District Tournament on Saturday at 12:00 with a contest with Saginaw Heritage.
