Dow High Varsity Baseball Opens 2021 Season On Saturday

The 2021 Dow High Varsity Baseball Team will be opening the season on Saturday April 10, 2021 with a doubleheader at Rochester High School starting at 11am.  After winning the 2019 District Championship, the Chargers had to wait almost two years to get the opportunity to get back on the field.  The 2021 Charger roster has two returning players in Senior Trent Johnson and Senior Logan McCoy.  Both were starters as sophomores on the 2019 squad.  Johnson returns to be slated as the opening day starting pitcher for game 1 with McCoy taking over the reigns at the shortstop position.  Both will be looked at to lead this team during the 2021 campaign.  Senior Riley Nelson and Senior Ryan Erdman  spent time with the 2019 varsity team as post season call ups to the expanded roster.  Both will see time at various positions and both will also see some time as pitchers.  Cam Patty, Alex Liakos, Caleb Brenske, and Matthew Douglas are seniors that are looking forward to having their first season with the varsity and contributing on the field of play.  " Our seniors are looking forward to being able to play baseball for Dow High.  They had to sit out last year and watch their junior season slip away with Covid restrictions.  Last year was tough to watch these players work so hard and not be able to play, I am sure they will do everything they can to play hard and have a successful 2021" said Head Coach Rich Juday.

The 2021 team have seven juniors and a one sophomore on the roster.  Juniors Nolan Sanders, Bill VanSumeren, Cam Haiser, Daniel Kowalczyk, Ryan Murphy, Jay Worsley, and John Szajenko are welcomed members to this roster and each will have a big part in the success of this team.  Sophomore Jack Bakus is the youngest member of the 2021 squad and will learn a lot from his older teammates.  " Juday states "I look forward to having multiple seasons with these players and having the chance to watch them develop and lead in the next couple of years.  These juniors are strong in pitching and play multiple positions and sophomore Jack Bakus adds versatility with being able to play all over the field and adds another left handed hitter to the lineup".

After this weekend, the Chargers are back on the road to take on Bay City Central on Thursday April 15th at 4:00pm and then travel to Mount Pleasant for a 3:30pm doubleheader on Monday April 19th.  Dow High will have their home opener when they host Flint Powers in a doubleheader starting at 4pm on April 22nd.  Juday states,  " We are looking to have a great start to the season and know how tough it will be to play our first six games on the road before playing in front of our fans. It is a long season and we want to be playing our best at the end of May.  Baseball is a game of adjustments and we will continue to work on our weaknesses and build on our strengths".
